Forestry and Conservation Education

The goal of this website is to provide an answer to the question 'what is forestry?' In general, it refers to a field that attempts to achieve forest conservation and sustainability. There are also more specific subdividsions, such as agro forestry and urban forestry. The former is a term that encompasses land use systems and practices in which perennial trees are integrated with crops and/or animals, all sharing the same land management unit. The latter on the other hand is the care and management of tree populations in urban locations with the objective of improving and embellishing the urban environment and landscape.

Another thing to know about forestry is that it is closely related to forest fire protection. Forest fires occur because of natural causes (lightning, volcanic eruption, sparks from rockfalls, and spontaneous combustion), and they can also be man-made (arson, discarded cigarettes, sparks from equipment, and power line arcs). Forest fires are a huge destructive force that can bring serious unbalance into an ecosystem, thus threatening forest conservation and sustainability. Fortunately there are several techniques and methods to prevent wildfires, and you can learn what they are here on this website.

Forestry may be regulated by local or national forestry services. The United States Department of Forestry for instance, manages 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands, covering 193 million acres. This agency of the United States Department of Agriculture is divided into the National Forest System, State and Private Forestry, and the Research and Development branch. Professionals who work in this field may be known as foresters. A forester Bachelor's or Master's degree can be obtained in several colleges and universities throughout the world, such as Yale, Maine, University of Maryland, University of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania State, New York-College of Environmental Science and Forestry and The University of Vermont in the United States; Inverness College, Guildford College of Further and Higher Education, Oxford, Aberdeen, University of Central Lancashire, University of Edinburgh, University of Reading, University of Wales Bangor, and University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom; and Paris Institute of Technology for Life, Food and Environmental Sciences, Ecole Nationale d'Ingénieurs des Travaux Agricoles de Bordeaux, and National University of Agronomy Toulouse in France, among many, many others. Other duties of the Forest Service include conservation education.

This type of education is that in which tries to raise awareness in people about the importance of wildlife, and how to manage it and preserve it without exhausting its resources. It is important to instill this knowledge, especially in the younger generations, but also in the general public, that nature is essential to the equilibrium of the entire planet and also that forestry is an important aspect in taking care of that equilibrium.
